Police arrest demonstrators at ASEAN summit

    By POH SI TENG

Police arrested Parti Keadilan Rakyat Vice President Tian Chua and five demonstrators at the 11th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, police said.

The incident occurred outside the Petronas Twin Towers on Dec. 14, 2005.

In the clip, Tian Chua said, “… discuss nothing about human rights, put no pressure on Burma, discuss nothing about Pattani, discuss nothing about ecological destruction, discuss nothing about labour and migrants, refugees, etc.”

“Today ASEAN (has proven) itself to be a club of debaters, who refused to listen to any form of criticism from the people. We are here to demand that the police to stop all this harrassment on people.”

    Cowboy globalisation

    By THE MARQUIS

We in Malaysia have always marvelled at developed countries. They are so advanced and educated, their streets so clean. Some might be tempted to complain about why Malaysia is not following these countries in terms of development. But do we know the problems that developed nations face? How can we choose what is relevant for our country?

In the light of the recent political mood throughout the world, one can observe that the word “globalisationâ€? is gaining currency everywhere. From Japan to the United Kingdom to the Indian sub-continent, it is the current obsession among political elites in these countries. However … Click here for the full article!

    Intellectualism, the new caste system

    By QU HSUEH MING

I’ve always wondered why modern society reveres those who are intelligent. It wasn’t always this way. Back in the old days where cavemen would beat poor sabre-tooth tigers to death with clubs for dinner, one’s worth was based on his ability to hunt. Stealth, cunning and brute strength were important characteristics that were essential. As society progressed, land, power and connections became the defining criteria, with barons doing as they pleased while serfs toiled for their masters.

And now, with the development of the tertiary sector, especially with intellects from the “Knowledge Economy,” there appears to be a new caste system … Click here for the full article!

Invoking the spirit of Dato Onn Jaafar in politics

    By CHAN SHIJUN

Even for those who have a minimal interest in politics, a glance at Malaysia’s political scene will tell them that something’s not quite right. For a country that supposedly prides itself for its multiracial make-up, one can be forgiven for feeling quite shocked that the major parties here all consist of race-based parties! For example, in the ruling Barisan Nasional (B.N.) coalition, only the Malays can be members of UMNO, the Chinese in the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), and the Indians in the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC). Doesn’t this situation contradict our national image?

One man wanted an all-inclusive party. He is the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) founder, Dato Onn Jaafar.

He was a visionary leader, who suggested that UMNO open its membership to all races in Malaysia.
