It’s “Visit Malaysia Year” and the government is working hard to promote our country as the tourist destination in Asia. They are trying to get word-out about Malaysia’s hospitality toward foreigners.

Unfortunately, all the money being spent on promotional campaigns will not clear up the bad press about our country - that some foreigners are being beaten and scalded with hot water.

    Who are they?

San Francisco-based KQED Radio aired another story today about the Malaysian government clamping down on political bloggers. Pacific Time, a KQED programme that is syndicated to about two dozen radio stations in the United States and in Asia, featured theCICAK in May.

Here’s a summary of “Malaysian Bloggers Threatened With Censorship” by Jonathan Kent for Pacific Time.

For the last decade, Malaysia has taken a liberal stance with Internet sites even as it censors traditional media offline. Now, an upsurge in controversial postings by local bloggers is getting the government’s attention. Now Malaysia is threatening to use its anti-terror laws against anyone who insults the king or Islam.

King or prime minister, who is our head of state?

Not too long ago, my father dragged me on a guided tour of Putrajaya. The highlight of the tour was visiting the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), built on the highest point of the city.

Toward the end of the tour, we were taken to a conference room which, according to our guide, can house up to 52 heads of state. In the room, there was a placard indicating our prime minister’s seat.

While the tour guide explained all these details, alarm bells went off in my head. “Head of state? But… isn’t the prime minister the head of government?” I chalked it up to a mistaken tour guide, and turned to the official brochures distributed at PICC.

The brochures had to be right. There were no grammatical mistakes in them, compared to most Malaysian English literature. Isn’t that a sign of accuracy?

But surely there was a mistake in the brochure. Since when was the prime minister the head of state? … Click here for the full article!

Nathaniel Tan, a prominent political blogger, activist and staff member of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) was detained incommunicado and was not given any grounds for his arrest, according to Malaysiakini. He was detained by three plainclothed policemen at 4:30 p.m. on 13 July in his office at Phileo Damansara.

According to Malaysiakini, police seized Nat’s laptop, CDs, personal computer, and oddly enough, his computer monitor.

Ng Eng Kiat, a colleague and part-time journalist who had been present at the time of arrest, said police had not given a clear reason for Nat’s arrest. Even when asked directly, the policemen had assured them that it was not an arrest. They “hanya nak siasat sedikit” (just wanted to chat). Upon complying, however, Nat was, as Jeff Ooi dryly puts it, “spirited away” … Click here for the full article!
