More than 1,000 protesters, mostly lawyers and members of civil society, marched today in support of the Malaysian Bar Council’s “Walk for Justice.” The peaceful protest was a response to the latest judicial scandal. A 2002 video recording was recently released by Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, showing VK Lingam, a senior lawyer discussing the appointment of judges with a person alleged to be Chief Justice Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim.

At around 10.15 a.m., police officers stopped five of the seven buses chartered by the Bar Council. Police said they were concerned about security issues. When negotiations failed, about 300 participants disembarked and walked 2 km to the Palace of Justice, where more people waited.

Race increasingly an issue in Malaysia, says BBC. What do you think, foreign minister?

UPDATE: Full transcript by JONATHAN LIM below.

    BBC Part 1:

Sarah Montague from BBC asks Foreign Minister Dato Seri Syed Hamid Albar about the “rising resentment” from Indian and Chinese Malaysians about Malay rights and privileges.

She asked him these hardball questions:
    1. Is it fair that it’s easier for Malays to get into universities compared to Chinese and Indians?
    2. How can Chinese and Indians feel a sense of belonging when they can’t get access to top cabinet posts?
    3. There are foreign investors “cashing out” of Malaysia because of privileges accorded to Malays. What do you think?
    4. Is the constitutional right to profess and practice one’s religion becoming increasingly meaningless?

    And there’s more.

You can watch the interview in parts below or in its entirety on BBC. Please post your thoughts on theCICAK or better still, send your commentary to write4thecicak@gmail.com … Click here for the full article!

Is MPS serious about scrapping the dog hunt?

    By NATASHA FERNZ

Last week, the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) said they were scrapping their highly controversial dog hunting competition.

But if that’s so, why is it still being promoted on their website? If they can’t even pull it off their site, how can we be sure that they’re removing posters and fliers around town?

    By ANA A.

This month, the Syariah Court annulled Mohd Sufian Mohamad and Zaiton Aziz’s marriage. The court issued the couple a permanent divorce, despite Zaiton Aziz saying that she was in a physically and emotionally satisfying union.

The judge who presided over the case declared the same-sex marriage illegitimate because of Mohd Sufian’s original gender designation.

According to a New Straits Times article, three doctors had conducted physical examinations and blood tests on Mohd Sufian and concluded that he is a woman.

Selayang dog hunt: Council astray, SPCA erratic

    Photo from The Star

    By DAVINA GOH

The above shows gaudy bright lights bouncing off an oversized dark grey jacket. Its wearer bears a feeble grip on a pole, generously wrapped and decorated in yellow paper ribbon. Attached to the end of the pole is a rope looping around a cardboard cut-out of a dog. Despite not being real, the dog is looking how she would be if she really was gracing the occasion: lost, forlorn and completely clueless of what she’s doing there. And looking at the plastic smile of the mock dog catcher, he doesn’t know what he’s doing there either.

The dude in the grey suit is Datuk Tang See Hang, a Selangor executive councilor and Rawang assemblyman. Datuk Tang has officiated a dog catching competition, organized by the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS).

Little did he know that … Click here for the full article!
